At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter whether you go with a moving company that uses weight or cubic feet. Understanding how each measurement system works can keep you from getting overcharges.
This is a question that comes across our desk almost daily. Which type of estimate should I trust and why? Customers are usually caught in the middle of two moving companies, but are unsure which direction to go. One moving company is claiming that weight is a scam where the other is claiming that cubic feet is a scam.
The bottom line is a scam moving company will always find a way to overcharge you regardless of the method of measurement they use. We always tell our customers to focus on hiring a reputable moving company and not worry about the measurement they use. Unfortunately there are scams on both ends so this is not the main question of the day. If you’re in search of top rated moving companies you can visit websites like moving.com or ProMoverReviews.com.
A good mover will spend time to make sure your move is properly quotes and make sure you understand the worst case scenarios. Starline chooses to quote based on cubic feet simply because we found this to be the most accurate method for us. We’ve tried both and have had more success with volume vs weight. Most customers request a “binding estimate” and in that case the weight vs cubic feet really doesn’t matter. Make sure you go over a detailed item list with your relocation coordinator. You can always update the list as needed and this can be done up to 24 hours before the date of your move.
Cubic foot = length x width x height divided by 1728
Example = 25″x 25″ x 25″ then divide by 1728 = 9cuft
If you have any questions on weight vs cubic feet estimates please feel free to contact us at anytime.
We strive to be in constant communication with our customers until the job is done. To get a free quote, to arrange your movers, or if you have questions or special requests, just drop us a line. We look forward to serving you!
